continued from previous toy blog post (action figure review 1)...

This is the Hot Toys MMS385 Star Wars Rogue One 1/6th scale Death Trooper (Specialist) 32cm tall Collectible Figure with LED light-up function. The batteries are inserted after removing the top of the helmet which is held via magnets, pretty neat and hassle-free - see the instructions posted HERE. The only thing that lights up are the tiny green lights on the helmet which is rather insignificant and doesn't really do much for the figure nor enhance its look in any way :( The upcoming Hot Toys MMS399 Star Wars Rogue One 1/6th scale Death Trooper Specialist (Deluxe Version) Collectible Figure will have an additional light-up scope located on the left side of the helmet (see the preview pics HERE) which will add a little more purpose for the lights.

The lights don't do as much for the figure as Iron Man (compare these pics with the LED light-up features found on the Hot Toys MMS300-D11 Movie Masterpiece Series Die-cast "Avengers: Age of Ultron" 1/6th scale Iron Man Mark XLV Collectible Figure posted HERE). With Iron Man, you feel that the lights are an integral part of the figure but less so with this Death Trooper. In the end though, most of us will pose these figures sans the lights (including Iron Man or other more lighted-up figures) because keeping the lights on means leaving the batteries in the figure and that can cause some serious damage when the batteries leak - see "Hot Toy Collecting Tip #1: Remove ALL Batteries!" posted HERE. The light-up feature is pretty much a sales gimmick and a ploy to ask for more money for a figure because you have to pay for the fancy electronics that is built into the figure. I'm a sucker for that since I have bought some of these electronic light-up figures but that's only because Hot Toys won't sell me one without the special features and I really do want the figure. I like the quality of Hot Toys figures and will continue to buy the ones I really fancy which is less these days considering the higher asking prices. In the end, they are not only much more FUN and beautiful to gaze at but they are also still much cheaper then the even higher priced cast-in-stone static statues which have zero articulation and almost no accessories as everything is moulded as one piece and displayed as such, an immovable unposeable frozen piece of stone. I guess that means I like plastic more than stone and am not a fan of Frozen LOL

The highly accurate and detailed Death Trooper 32.5 cm tall figure comes with finely sculpted Death Trooper helmet with LED light-up functions (green light, battery operated), newly designed and meticulously crafted Death Trooper armor, newly developed black under-suit, black tactical vest / chest rig, black belt with pouches, black pauldron, and black boots.

Here the Hot Toys Rogue One: A Star Wars Story 1/6th scale Death Trooper collectible figure is armed with his blaster rifle. The Stormtrooper's original BlasTech E-11 blaster rifle props were built from the British-made Sterling L2A1 submachine gun but the Death Trooper blasters feature VFC HK416C-style stocks. The rifle has a three-point sling system that is borrowed from modern military warfare. Throughout the films in the Star Wars saga, creator George Lucas was determined that the universe he envisioned would have a "lived-in" look to it. Thus, the many weapons seen in the saga are in fact visually modified or based upon real-world weapons.

The elite soldiers of Imperial Intelligence, Death Troopers are encased in specialized stormtrooper armor with a dark, ominous gleam. These soldiers serve as bodyguards and enforcers for Director Krennic, a highly placed officer within the Advanced Weapons Research division of the Empire.

Death Troopers also wore shoulder pauldrons, something we saw on the Sandtroopers of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope - see the link HERE of 1/6th scale Sandtrooper figures with their different colored pauldrons.

Death Troopers carry the BlasTech SE-14r Light Repeating Blaster Pistol as their sidearm (secondary weapon) via a loop on their belts. The BlasTech SE-14r Light Repeating Blaster Pistol was built from a Swiss Rexim-Favor Mk5 submachine gun with the stock, barrel, and magazine removed and two ASI 4x20 scopes attached. The weapon originally appeared in publicity stills for A New Hope, but Rogue One is the first time it has appeared in the films.

As mentioned earlier, I think this is the first time Hot Toys has released a figure before the movie even opens in the cinema theaters :) Let's hope more can be done about this so that we can get our figures before the movie and not a year or more after the film has ended its run on the big screen. Hoping to get hold of the Hot Toys MMS389 Rogue One: A Star Wars Story 1/6th scale Shoretrooper Collectible Figure next - see the preview pics HERE. Let's pray Hot Toys doesn't spring a deluxe edition surprise like what they did with this Death Trooper (Specialist) figure.
