The only Kung Fu monks I know come from Shaolin temple in China and are featured in the many movies I've seen growing up in this part of the world. Shaolin Kung Fu, also called Shaolin Wushu is among the oldest institutionalized style of Chinese martial arts. Shaolin kung fu originated and was developed in the Buddhist Shaolin temple in Henan province, China. During the 1500 years of its development, Shaolin kung fu, with its rich content, became one of the largest schools of kung fu.

I'm not too sure who this Holy Man is supposed to be but he does appear to be a video games character created and developed by Tencent Games and is an officially licensed product being released by Very Cool.

Arkham Knight is a new villain in Gotham and an antithetical version of Batman. He wears a militaristic Batsuit and an Arkham symbol on his chest. He is one of the main antagonists in Batman: Arkham Knight and seems to have an unknown connection with the Dark Knight. The Arkham Knight dons a militaristic version of the bat-suit meant to mock Batman's appearance. The inside of his helmet gives him a heads up display of his troops throughout Gotham and the ears relay his commands to his troops. By using the Arkham symbol on his chest plate he inflicts psychological warfare on Batman reminding him of the past Arkham events. The chest plate also acts as a countermeasure to the Batclaw.

Check out Square Enix Play Arts Kai Arkham Knight action figure from "Batman: Arkham Knight". From Square Enix: With mechanical armor and army fatigues, this figure shows off a wide range of different realistic textures. During sculpting we paid special attention to keeping a sharp silhouette all around. His helmet, that looks very similar to that of the BATMAN, has a translucent visor. There are two interchangeable helmet pieces: one to recreate his default appearance, and a second one painted so as to give off a glowing eye effect. Other accessories include: a sniper rifle, two handguns, and three interchangeable hands to allow for a variety of action poses.

I'm beginning to appreciate the figures that Square Enix are putting out in their Play Arts Kai series. I already got the Square Enix Play Arts Kai "Batman: Arkham Origins" Batman 10.5-inch action figure (reviewed in my toy blog HERE and HERE) as well as the Square Enix Play Arts Kai "Batman: Arkham Origins" Deathstroke 10-inch (25.5 cm) action figure review HERE, HERE and HERE so this one's going on the pre-order list as well :)

Review 1: Hot Toys MMS264 "X-Men: Days of Future Past" 1/6th Wolverine 12-inch Figure

$

0
"X-Men: Days of Future Past" is a 2014 superhero film based on the fictional X-Men characters that appear in Marvel Comics. The story, inspired by the 1981 Uncanny X-Men storyline "Days of Future Past" produced by Chris Claremont and John Byrne, focuses on two time periods and Wolverine going to 1973 to save the future of mankind.

Convinced that mutants pose a threat to humanity, Dr. Bolivar Trask (Peter Dinklage) develops the Sentinels, enormous robotic weapons that can detect a mutant gene and zero in on that person. In the 21st century, the Sentinels have evolved into highly efficient killing machines. With mutants now facing extinction, Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) volunteers to go back in time and rally the X-Men of the past to help change a pivotal moment in history and thereby save their future.

Hot Toys MMS264 "X-Men: Days of Future Past" 1/6th scale Wolverine 12-inch Collectible Figure is an authentic and detailed fully realized likeness of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine in "X-Men: Days of Future Past". It is Wolverine of the future so he has some grey / white hair and he wears a specially-tailored future Wolverine battle suit with armor parts, including knee armor and black armored boots. Of all the X-Men in the comics and movies / films, Wolverine is the only mutant who has been replicated most in 1:6 scale, mostly by Hot Toys. There were other X-Men in all the movies as well as super villains but we haven't seen any of them materialize. Professor X / Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) from 2011's "X-Men: First Class" almost made it but he got canned - Check out a picture of the 12-inch figure on display at STGCC2012 HERE

I guess Wolverine is the only figure that brings in the dough for Hot Toys as far as the X-Men is concerned. Money talks in the real world and the other X-Men just don't have the pulling power to warrant a space on the display shelf which is quite sad since many collectors would like to see the whole team assembled. Guess the only team that made it to completion is the Avengers. Every other team has fallen by the wayside after one or two members were released. It is looking like Guardians of the Galaxy will be missing Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista) because nothing has been heard or seen of him and Hot Toys has been keeping real quiet about the whole issue. Well, as they say in show business, we have to get on with the show.

Hot Toys "X-Men: Days of Future Past" Wolverine was part of my April 2015 haul (see my toy blog post HERE) and I really like the outfit he comes in. Box packaging is the standard Hot Toys shoe-box style for all their MMS (Movie Masterpiece Series) products these days.

Hot Toys MMS264 "X-Men: Days of Future Past" 1/6th scale Wolverine 12-inch Figure does not come with any accessories - zero, zip, zilch, nada... NOT a thing except for two pairs of extra hands - pair of fists with metal claws and a pair of relax palms, besides the pair of fists that come with this figure

There's the instruction sheet that tells you what you can and cannot do with this figure. It's mostly the usual stuff about lifting the head before turning it and how to switch out the different hands.

Here's Hot Toys MMS264 "X-Men: Days of Future Past" 1/6th scale Wolverine 12-inch Figure out of the box. I immediately switched out the hands to the ones with adamantium claws because to me, Wolverine isn't who he is unless he has his claws out. Wolverine first appeared in the last panel of The Incredible Hulk #180, with his first full appearance in #181 (cover-dated Nov. 1974). Wolverine is typical of the many tough antiheroes that emerged in American popular culture after the Vietnam War; his willingness to use deadly force and his brooding nature became standard characteristics for comic book antiheroes by the end of the 1980s.

In 1999, Hugh Jackman was cast as Wolverine in Bryan Singer's X-Men (2000). At 1.89m (6 ft 2.5 inches), Jackman stands 30 cm taller than Wolverine, who is said in the original comic book to be 5 feet 3 inches (1.60 m). Hence, the filmmakers were frequently forced to shoot Jackman at unusual angles or only from the waist up to make him appear shorter than he actually is, and his co-stars wore platform soles. Hot Toys 1:6 scale Wolverine stands approximately 30 cm tall with a muscular body that has over 30 points of articulations.

In the comic books, Wolverine's claws extend from the backs of his gloves. But for the films, his claws extend out from between his knuckles. Wolverine's hands do not have openings for the claws to move through: they cut through his flesh every time he extrudes them, with occasional references implying that he feels a brief moment of slight pain in his hands when he unsheathes them. Jackman had to get used to wearing Wolverine's claws. "Every day in my living room, I'd just walk around with those claws, to get used to them. I've got scars on one leg, punctures straight through the cheek, on my forehead."

Wolverine has appeared in every single movie in the X-Men film series, being played by Hugh Jackman in all seven films. Jackman is set to reprise his role as Wolverine in a third Wolverine film in 2017. On May 7, 2015, he said it would be the last time he depicts the character on film: "It is my last time. It just felt like it was the right time to do it. And let's be honest, 17 years. I never thought in a million years it would last, so I'm so grateful to the fans for the opportunity of playing it." Wolverine will be back... but for how long more, no one really knows.

Even though there are hardly any 1:6 scale accessories that come with this Hot Toys MMS264 "X-Men: Days of Future Past" Wolverine 12-inch Figure, I really like the costume / battle suit with armor parts, including knee armor and black armored boots. And Hot Toys has really done them well and I like how it all comes together.

Check out the close-up pictures taken of Hot Toys MMS264 "X-Men: Days of Future Past" Wolverine 1/6th scale head sculpt and body armor. There's no mistaking from looking at the head sculpt that it's Hugh Jackman and Hot Toys scores top marks in this area. They have captured his likeness with real-like hair sculpture, facial expression, detailed wrinkles, beard, gesture and skin textures. And the armor has so much intricate details. The base layer is a stretchable fabric which allows for much articulation without any restrictions. The armor is non-removable and Hot Toys advises against trying to detach it. Scroll down to get a closer look at all the nice details.

The pair of black armored boots plus knee armor are just as cool. See all the nice details in the pictures below.

The right and left knee armor are different which is a nice touch, just like the Star Wars Stormtrooper leg armor which is not the same for each side and that makes it more unique. See my toy blog post HERE where I posted comparison pictures of different 1:6 scale Star Wars Stormtroopers produced and released by Hot Toys, Sideshow, Medicom and Marmit.

Here's a picture of the Figure display stand with Wolverine nameplate and the movie logo, the only accessory that came with this figure besides the two extra pairs of hands.

Square Enix Play Arts Kai DC Comics Variant 1/7th scale Batman figure by Tetsuya Nomura

Tetsuya Nomura is a Japanese video game artist, designer and director working for Square Enix. He designed characters for the Final Fantasy series, debuting with Final Fantasy V and continuing with various later installments. He received the "Excellence in Visual Arts" award by the International Game Developers Association for his work on the first Kingdom Hearts game, alongside Shinji Hashimoto. (source: wiki)

This is Tetsuya Nomura's version of Batman. This re-imagined version of Batman looks more demon than bat, more final fantasy than comic book and more manga / anime than he has ever been. The very long and large ears does remind one of Zoltar, the main villain of the series "Battle of the Planets", an American loose adaptation of the Japanese "Gatchaman".

Square Enix Play Arts Kai DC Comics Variant 1/7th scale Batman figure by Tetsuya Nomura looks very heavily armored and instead of a cape, he has wings like a bat's, with extra arms that fold when the wings are retracted and extend when the wings are open. It's definitely something that I can see coming out of an anime but not very DC; more of a Japanese type of thing than a Western influence. With his wings, this re-imagined Batman obviously has no need for a Batmobile, Bat-plane or Bat-pod because any one of his vehicles / transport would have to be massive to accommodate his wings.

Hot Toys MMS264 "X-Men: Days of Future Past" 1/6th scale Wolverine 12-inch Figure Review II

continued from previous post...

If you were to google "X-Men: Days of Future Past", you will notice that Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) doesn't have that many poses for the film's promotional posters and the pose below is very close to one of those poses, although Wolverine shows more teeth on the promo material. This is the recently released Hot Toys MMS264 "X-Men: Days of Future Past" 1/6th scale Wolverine 12-inch Collectible Figure which is an authentic and detailed fully realized likeness of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine in "X-Men: Days of Future Past".

I covered the box packaging, contents and accessories in my first-part review in the earlier post HERE, so this second toy blog post is just to show off the figure in different poses. Hot Toys "Days of Future Past" Wolverine comes with an approximately 30 cm tall muscular body with over 30 points of articulations and you do get the articulations from this figure, unlike some other Hot Toys figures where the articulation is restricted by the fabric clothing / costume they are wearing. Wolverine's specially tailored future battle suit with armor parts allows his arms to move freely as the material used is a stretchable fabric. The armor parts are glued onto the costume and does not hamper his movements either. The main armor piece over his body is also not so tight and it does not restrict his mobility. Overall a pretty agile figure for posing and display. But then Wolverine is not Nightcrawler or Spider-Man so you don't expect him to get into extreme poses either. Even when he fights, it's always up close and bare claws. Not so much ninja moves but more animalistic and beast-like, especially when he gets his berserker rage on!

Scroll down to see the rest of the pictures.
Click on them for bigger and better views.

Before the Weapon X program (in later comics called the Weapon Plus program), in which Wolverine's skeleton was reinforced with the virtually indestructible metal adamantium, his claws were made of extremely dense bone. These three retractable claws are housed within each forearm. In the film, when Wolverine goes back to 1973, he still had his bone claws since he hasn't gone under the Weapon X program yet. It would have been interesting to see Wolvie with bone claws although I still much prefer these metal ones. I started reading X-Men from way back and all that time, Wolverine had metal claws which came out from the backs of his gloves.

Hugh Jackman has certainly brought Wolverine / Logan to life on the big screen and it seems everyone is in agreement that Jackman's interpretation of Wolverine is pretty much spot on, even though Jackman is much taller than Wolverine ever was. Hugh Jackman was cast as Wolverine in Bryan Singer's X-Men (2000) and will likely end his role as Wolverine in the third Wolverine film in 2017.

NEXT: Comparison pictures of Hot Toys MMS264 "X-Men: Days of Future Past" 1/6th scale Wolverine with some of the other Wolverine 12-inch figures that have been released.

As for me, I much prefer Caity Lotz as vigilante Sara Lance / Black Canary in the Arrow TV series. Not really a fan of Katie Cassidy as attorney-turned-vigilante Laurel Lance who took over the mantle of Black Canary after Sara was killed. Good news is Caity Lotz will be returning as White Canary in the upcoming DC's Legends of Tomorrow :) It looks like DC is doing to TV what Marvel is doing on the big screen. After all, Marvel has their Black Widow and DC's got Black Canary.

DID 1/6 'Miyazawa Kazuo' Imperial Japanese Navy Zero Fighter Pilot (International Version)

$

The Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service was the air arm of the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II. The organization was responsible for the operation of naval aircraft and the conduct of aerial warfare in the Pacific War. Japanese navy aviators, like their Army counterparts, preferred maneuverable aircraft, leading to lightly built but extraordinarily agile types, most famously the A6M Zero, which achieved its feats by sacrificing armor and self-sealing fuel tanks.

The Japanese pilot training program was very selective and rigorous, producing a high-quality and long-serving pilot corps, who ruled the air in the Pacific during early World War II. However, the long duration of the training program, combined with a shortage of gasoline for training, did not allow the Navy to rapidly provide qualified replacements in sufficient numbers.

The Kamikaze ("divine" or "spirit wind"), officially Tokubetsu Kōgekitai ("Special Attack Unit"), abbreviated as Tokkō Tai, and used as a verb as Tokkō ("special attack"), were suicide attacks by military aviators from the Empire of Japan against Allied naval vessels in the closing stages of the Pacific campaign of World War II, designed to destroy warships more effectively than was possible with conventional attacks. Kamikaze aircraft were essentially pilot-guided explosive missiles, purpose-built or converted from conventional aircraft. Pilots would attempt to crash their aircraft into enemy ships in what was called a "body attack" in planes laden with some combination of explosives, bombs, torpedoes and full fuel tanks; accuracy was much better than a conventional attack, the payload and explosion larger.

Preview Square Enix Play Arts Kai Marvel Variant 1/7 scale Asgardian god of thunder Thor

Square Enix has now extended their Play Arts Kai Variant line to a third Marvel comic character (previous previews were of Iron Man - pictures HERE, and Spider-Man - posted earlier on my toy blog HERE) and that is Thor, the Asgardian god of thunder based on the Norse mythological deity of the same name. The company has officially unveiled its new take on Thor, and seldom has Marvel’s god of thunder looked so pumped, so angry and so heavy metal-like.

It's a rather interesting take for the character and closer to the comic book version than Iron Man was. Square Enix has given their Play Arts Kai Marvel Variant 1/7 scale Asgardian god of thunder Thor bulging veins, armor, and a hammer that’s half Thor’s height, in other words, HUGE. The swinging Mjolnir attachment and lightning effect are nice touches.

Square Enix is continuing with the Marvel line the same way they have gone with DC Variants and they are certainly giving us more options in terms of which action figure to get. Targeted for release in September 2015 for about USD$122, the figure also comes with three pairs of interchangeable hands, a plastic cape, swappable face and a display stand.

Square Enix Play Arts Kai Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain – Burning Man action figure

According to Metal Gear Wiki: Yevgeny Borisovitch Volgin (Russian: Евгений Борисович Волгин), also known as Thunderbolt, was a Stalinist GRU colonel, as well as the strategic operations commander of the Soviet Union, who attempted to seize control of the Soviet Union by overthrowing Nikita Khrushchev and installing Leonid Brezhnev and Alexei Kosygin in his place. Volgin was an extremely strong man, even for his large size. He combined his tremendous strength and skills with unexplained ability of electrical manipulation, gaining him the nickname "Thunderbolt" in the West.

In Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, an apparition appears that bears some resemblance to a demonic version of the then-long deceased Volgin. He wears a bandolier of bullets on his chest and a tattered suit very similar to the ones worn by Volgin in the latter stages of Operation Snake Eater (when his coat had been removed). The positioning of the bullets between his knuckles also confirms The Burning Man's identity.

This will be Square Enix Play Arts Kai 1/7th scale Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain – Burning Man action figure. The beautifully sculpted figure is based on a character from the highly anticipated Metal Gear Solid V video game, which is due in September. The character is seen in the trailer for the game. The Burning Man includes pieces to display him naturally, or as if he is on fire. It includes swappable chest pieces, fire effects, multiple hands, and a figure stand. This figure certainly has a nice vibe to it. I don't particularly like the human heads sculpted by the Square Enix sculptors for their Play Arts Kai series which is why I stayed away from the line for so long but the figures with masks / helmets look very good.

Comparison pictures of various 1:6 scale Wolverine figures from the different X-Men films

continued from previous post...

Here's a group picture of some of the 12-inch Wolverine figures I have. I wanted to show how different the earlier released 1:6 scale Wolverine head sculpts compare with the latest released version. It's nice to see the improvements made and the sculpting skills of the artists at Hot Toys. In the picture below, there are the two Medicom Toy released 1:6 scale Wolverine action figures right in front - Medicom RAH (Real Action Hero) Marvel Comics Wolverine and X-Men: The Last Stand - Wolverine. These were offered years before any of the Hot Toys Wolverine hit the 12-inch figure scene. Medicom Toy Wolverine (Marvel comics version) even came with an extra snarling Logan head sculpt - you can see the pictures and review posted earlier on my toy blog HERE.

The Wolverine in the center of the picture is actually a kitbashed Wolverine from "X-Men: The Last Stand". I managed to find a 1/6 scale Wolverine head sculpt and a "X-Men: The Last Stand" 1/6 scale Wolverine costume / outfit with claw hands separately but on the same day at a flea market for less than USD$100 so I decided to put this figure together. You can check out my earlier post HERE for more pictures. The other two Wolverine 12-inch figures at the back of the picture are Hot Toys Wolverine figures. There were fake "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" being sold on e-bay and Hot Toys cautioned people against buying the fake ones thinking they were original - see my post HERE

The picture below shows the Marvel comics Wolverine 12-inch figure released by Medicom Toy. He was the first character to be released as part of their Marvels series. Captain Action also released a 1/6th scale Wolverine costume set in 2013 which I also reviewed on my toy blog HERE. The uniform set has the signature yellow spandex body suit highlighted with tiger stripes, blue gloves, trunks, shoulder pads and winged-boots with a red belt which is his classic Wolverine costume when he first appeared in the comic books and would serve as the basis for most of Wolverine's future costumes.

Here's a look at the Medicom Toy's Hugh Jackman Wolverine from "X-Men: The Last Stand" - more pictures are posted HERE. Medicom Toys were never very good at sculpting realistic head sculpts and the heads always turn out looking rather comical / anime-like, very different from what Hot Toys can do and has done for the 1/6th scale collectible figure market.

Since Hot Toys entered into the movie merchandise market with their Movie Masterpiece Series, they have upped the ante and brought 1:6 scale sculpting to a whole new level with their very realistic head sculpts which capture the actual actor's likeness amazingly. Check out the sculpts they have done for Hugh Jackman as Wolverine in the pictures below.

Here's the kitbash "X-Men: The Last Stand" 1/6 scale Wolverine (more pics HERE)

And these are Hot Toys 1/6th scale X-Men Origins: Wolverine and latest released "X-Men: Days of Future Past" Wolverine standing side-by-side

Hot Toys MMS103 "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" movie 1/6th scale Wolverine Limited Edition Collectible Figurine was released in 2009 and featured the first ever Hot Toys hirsute muscular figure body. You can check out my reviews HERE, HERE and HERE.

I have recently covered the Hot Toys MMS264 "X-Men: Days of Future Past" 1/6th scale Wolverine 12-inch Figure HERE and HERE

Here's a picture of some of the other Wolverine figures I have that are not 1:6 scale, besides the Medicom Toy Wolverine figures. Certainly would like to see Square Enix's take on Wolverine as part of their Play Arts Kai series.

Science Ninja Team Gatchaman (科学忍者隊ガッチャマン Kagaku Ninjatai Gatchaman) is a five-member superhero team composed of the main characters of several anime created by Tatsuo Yoshida, originally produced in Japan by Tatsunoko Productions and later adapted into several English-language versions. The team is also known as Gatchaman.

The original series, produced in 1972, was eponymously entitled Kagaku Ninja Tai Gatchaman and is best known in the English-speaking world as the adaptation entitled Battle of the Planets (1978). The series had additional English adaptations with G-Force: Guardians of Space (1986).

Most of the team are in their late teens, except for Jinpei (who is about ten or eleven years old). They include Ken Washio, the team leader and tactical expert; Jō Asakura, his second-in-command marksman and weapons expert; Jun, the team's electronics and demolitions expert; Jinpei, the youngest and the reconnaissance expert, an adopted brother of Jun, and Ryū Nakanishi, the ship's pilot. The main characters wear teen clothing with T-shirts numbered to show their rank in the team or caped, birdlike battle uniforms.

It looks like Sentinel International Co., Ltd. will be releasing both Tatsunoko Heroes Fighting Gear - Gatchaman G-1 Ken 18 cm tall action figures. Going by the preview pictures released, it looks like these figures will have amazing articulation with light-up chest emblems and they look pretty damn awesome!

Ken Washio aka the Eagle, is a leader of the Science Ninja Team. His weapon is a Razor Sonic boomerang and he flies an airplane.

The Gatchaman team employ a unique style of violent, effective martial arts (developed by Dr. Nambu) drawing on their ability to perform feats similar to their avian namesakes, such as high-speed running and flight, high jumping and silent attacks. This fighting system, known as Science Ninja Technique (科学忍法 Kagaku Ninpō), is mentioned in the Japanese lyrics of the Gatchaman theme. The team members also use signature weapons and mecha-style vehicles, each with a mundane, disguised form. To change modes, each member is equipped with a wrist device that, in addition to communications and tracking, enables a change when the proper gesture and voice command ("Bird, go!") is given.
